So really, does porn fuel rape?

Written by ... Tuesday, 02 September 2008
As I waited patiently to watch some nice and not-so-nice boobs make their way down Queen St the other week during the Boobs on Bikes parade, there was about 60 or so people that preceded the parade with signs that claim "Porn Fuels Rape". The march was organised by the Auckland Women's Centre and Stop Demand and featured 5 City Counsellors. My immediate thought after that was that if it was true, then wouldn't pretty much every single man (and a few of the women too) in this nation be having urges to prowl the streets looking for an easy target?

Wanted

Written by Movie Review by Theo Moore Monday, 25 August 2008
The trailer for this looked amazing. It had crazy stunts, Angelina Jolie, cars fly through the air upside down, something about bullets bending in the air, and more Angelina Jolie. I only hoped the full length version would live up to the short one.Well it started awesome. There were plenty of cool action scenes that kept me on the edge of my seat for pretty much the entire first half of the movie. The spectacular special effects kept you asking yourself ‘can that really happen?' and for most of the film you don't care. But as the movie goes on, the action scenes become more and more farfetched and after the 5th or so time a bullet hit another one mid-flight, you started to lose patience with the silliness. What was once cool had turned into a joke.  The plot has loser Wesley (James McAvoy) discover his father was a world class assassin and after he is killed, Wesley is inducted into the same line of work. However, Morgan Freeman may not be letting in on all the details of Wesley's father and what this secret order he runs is actually up to. And then there's Thomas Kretschmann who's a renegade out to bring him down.

Losing touch in virtual communication

Written by Talia Blewitt ponders whether or not the internet has brought the world together, or only alienated Monday, 25 August 2008
"That's going straight to Facebook." A phrase heard all too often these days after a classic photo has been taken. It makes me wonder at what point the line faded when differentiating the virtual world from that which is real around us. The Internet has become so ingrained in our lives that we make reference to it more often than we are conscious of. It then led me to ponder the effects of the Internet on our everyday communication, more specifically, interpersonal communication. That's right Communication students, this old debate. To be quite frank with you, I'm tired of this argument. It goes round in circles, there are points for yay and nay and ultimately I sit on the fence with a big, fat "humph".

An Alien in America, Part 1: The Journey.

Written by .... Monday, 25 August 2008
There are many perks as to living in a country like New Zealand. Sequestered from the rest of the world, we are far from the perils facing other nations as we blithely live our carefree lives. However, our geographical obscurity means that we rarely get a chance to interact with the rest of the world, leading us to the false belief that we are somehow a microcosm of other cultures. Therefore, when I was encouraged to take part in the AUT Business School Exchange Programme, following some typically outstanding grade averages, I saw it as an opportunity to gain some independence, experience and an impressive entry on my CV.

10 Ways to relieve that exam stress.

1/ Shower in the twilight zone. 2/ Grab a couple of candles and light them around the room. Or if you don't have any, shower in the dark. It's actually quite relaxing. And when you've memorised the feel of the bottles you can challenge your flatmates to a game of ‘guess that bottle' and score some extra cash.  3/ Quiet. 4/ Find somewhere quiet (easier said than done for some). Living in a small town myself, it can get pretty quiet at times. Whether it's just walking around the block or sitting in a park somewhere. The lack of sound can be a good change from your hectic school and social life.
