Feminism

The dreaded ‘F' word. Yes, that's right, I'm talking about feminism. A recent class discussion (and a pending exam question) has prompted some serious thought on this topic. Being a woman, I should know what a feminist is. I should know whether I am one. Sadly, I'm lacking answers on both counts. The truth is the definition of a feminist has become blurry thanks to media-fueled stereotypes. On the one hand we're presented with the image of the archetypal ‘bra-burner' who hates men, won't shave her legs and could possibly be a lesbian. And on the other is the more modern version of a feminist who is slightly more liberated i.e. she'll wear make-up and have a career and no husband if she pleases (think Sex and the City).

Kiwi teen-glish

Does anyone else read Sideswipe? It's the one at the back of the Herald every day. I love it, it's my guilty pleasure. Quite often it's one of the few parts of the paper that I always read. Anyways, yesterday's issue had a compilation of Kiwi teen-glish (in response to a previous compilation of British teen-glish). Despite the fact I only made it half way through the book before becoming, oh okay, a little bored, I still learned some interesting things that kinda made me go, "Ohhh so ALL men are like this? It's not just him? I'm not going crazy? I don't need to trade him in?"

... The Dark Knight

So I went to the Batman movie and have to admit it was pretty damn good (and no, not because Heath Ledger died). However, having never seen any of the other batman films, a few things went over my head. This is the ‘dummy's guide' before you go see it. Two Face: While initially being one of Batman's allies, Two Face (Harvey Dent) turns evil after half his face is disfigured. Subsequently, Two Face becomes a crime boss who decides to do good or evil, based on the flipping of a coin. Modern stories have dabbled in attributing Harvey Dent's character to his multiple-personality disorder and abusive childhood.
