...Perez Hilton
Sluttyiena, Mushy Fartone and Kiki Drunkst - think I've just come up with some creative names for three of the seven dwarves? Think again. In fact, these are the nicknames provided by gossip blogger and self-titled "Queen of all Media," Perez Hilton. Perez is the creator of perezhilton.com - dubbed "Hollywood's most hated website."
Perez Hilton was born Mario Armando Lavandeira 29 years ago to Cuban parents. Obnoxious and loud with a colourful array of hairstyles, Lavandeira first began his career in the media writing for gay publications and working as a media relations assistant for a gay rights organisation. In 2005 he began pagesixsixsix.com which later turned into perezhilton.com.
Adopting his name from a certain socialite, Perez Hilton has literally
become famous for berating celebs such as Sienna Miller, Mischa Barton
and Kirsten Dunst. He ‘outed' gay boy-band singer Lance Bass and was
one of the first media outlets in the world to report Fidel Castro's
alleged death, all the while participating in celebrity culture
himself, mixing and mingling with the stars he writes about.
Perez's
blogging style is brash and un-apologetic .Take one look at the site
and you'll see Perez's trademark hand-drawn captions over paparazzi
photos, accompanied by crude white dots coming out of celebs' noses and
nether regions. ‘Get Better' is scrawled over a photo of Britney
Spears, whereas Pete Doherty is simply labeled ‘Wack'.
Despite
an adoring public - the website attracts seven million hits daily -
Perez has been called out by much of Hollywood for his salacious
remarks. An altercation with Desperate Housewives' Jesse Metcalfe
ensued at a club last year when Metcalfe threatened to kill Perez due
to the website's insinuations that Metcalfe was gay. Likewise, Nicole
Ritchie wanted an explanation for his ‘zombie hands' critique when she
spotted him at a Sunset Boulevard coffee shop he regularly writes at.
The Chateau Marmont has banned him from their upscale Hollywood hotel
on the basis of "principle". The blogger is also continuously juggling
lawsuits from a bevy of news agencies and photographers for allegedly
publishing copyright material.
Somehow though, this doesn't
impede Perez's own star. Listed under ‘Personally Perez' are dozens of
photos with the blogger cosied up to celebs like Rihanna, Kylie
Minogue, Kelly Osbourne and even Paris Hilton herself. Incidentally,
Paris is one of the few people that Perez openly refuses to degrade,
reportedly because they have become good friends.
Currently,
Perez has been given his own show on American channel VH1 titled ‘What
Perez Sez' which entails his hobnobbing with celebs. Ask Perez about
his own celebrity status though and you'll find he doesn't like the
term. He recently told Rolling Stone magazine, "I'm not a celebrity.
These days, a celebrity is someone who is famous just for being famous.
It's got negative connotations. I'm an entertainer, I'm a worker, I'm a
busy bee, dripping honey everywhere."
