SoSE vs AuSM

The Society of Student Engineers (SoSE) wants to take away the power AuSM has to veto changes to club rules.
SoSE wants members of any affiliated clubs to have a say if AuSM wants to change a club’s constitution.
    AuSM currently has veto rights over a club’s constitution, which means the AuSM executive council decides whether a club can change its own rules.
    However Leith Simpson, president of SoSE, says a club’s constitution should not be subject to a veto.
    “It takes power away from individual members,” he says. “A constitution is a founding document. It has fundamental guidelines.”

Smoking, not our future?

AUT may in the future become a smoke free campus with a growing number in the student community wanting to rid the institution of cancer sticks altogether.
    President of AUT student association (AuSM), Jan Herman, says students are becoming increasingly aware of the harmful aspects of smoking and want AUT to butt out smokers from campus grounds.
    “I believe the student community is gearing towards eventually seeing a smoke free campus,” says Herman.

Youth Enrolment

A campaign targeting 18 to 24 year old voters is being launched following a survey showing 40 per cent of eligible voters who are not enrolled are in that age group.
The internet-based Electoral Enrolment Centre campaign for young people will begin in August. Murray Wicks, the national manager of the Electoral Enrolment Centre, says it is important to get young people interested in the election so they can exercise their democratic rights.

So Close, Yet So Far for AUT Youth Innovators!

 Three weeks ago, Team Sustainable Systems, AUT’s National Microsoft Imagine Cup 2008 team, must have been feeling ‘So close, yet so far’ within their hearts, as the winners for this year’s competition were announced.
    “It has been a long journey within a month, with us working our ideas from scratch to an actual product that is workable and should be ready for commercialisation anytime soon” said Michael Teoh, the Business Development expert in the team.

Folding for those less fortunate

  One thousand origami paper cranes will be sent to the victims of the China earthquake to express the sympathy and best wishes of Chinese students at AUT.
    The AUT Chinese Centre is calling out to all students and staff to make a paper crane and send their compassion to those in need in China.
    Chinese Students Advisor Marlene Lu says a Chinese businessman will purchase the 1000 paper cranes.
