President's Column

Prez Sez Issue 15

Hi everyone
Well like all good things, re-orientation for 2008 has come to an end. I hope you all enjoyed the 2 weeks of festivities and do apologise for the dodgy weather we had at times. We hope to bring you better weather at the end of year with the AuSM Dis-Orientation festival that will take place in October. Katchafire has already been named as our headline act and there will be more artists playing for sure.
Along with the end of re-o week, nominations for the AuSM executive council for 2009 have also come to a close. Next week the candidates standing for positions will be announced and campaigning for elections will commence shortly after. Keep a look out for your future leaders and make sure you ask them plenty of questions about why they are standing for their particular roles and what they plan to do for you in the coming year.

Kia Ora everyone

In 1966 AuSM was formally established as an Incorporated Society and since this time has had strong leadership that has driven the organisation forward to become what it is today. This is your very last week to nominate yourself or one of your friends for one of the 13 Exec Council positions available on the AuSM governance board for 2009.

Being a part of AuSM as student president over the last 18 months has taught me a huge amount about leadership and management. Running an organisation with a turnover of over $2 million and managing and motivating a reasonable sized team of paid employees and volunteers hasn’t been easy, however it has taught me an awful lot and I can say it has definitely been the best thing I have ever done.

Hi everyone
Welcome back to the beginning of semester 2. To help take away the winter blues AuSM has been working hard over the break to bring you a decent line-up of acts and entertainers for re-orientation. While smaller than Orientation at the beginning of the year and a lot chillier, it is nonetheless a good time to party, have fun and socialise before you start to get bombarded with assignments and exams.
To give you a highlight of who we are hosting this coming two week period, we have Pluto, Concord Dawn, Open Souls and House of Shem to name a few of our artists. There is also a comedy night, foam party and Static FM will be throwing a launch party for their radio station. To see a full breakdown of the 2 week programme visit us on the web at www.ausm.org.nz. or pick up a gig guide from one of the AuSM promotional stands. As per usual AuSM will be giving out free stuff so make sure you pop along to the quad at lunchtime and check it out.

Kia Ora everyone
There are only two more issues of debate left for the semester so I will try and use my words wisely in communicating to you some useful information. Currently the 2009 AuSM executive council election nominations are open. There are 13 positions up for grabs and there is something for everyone. You don’t need to have previously been a head boy/or girl or be an A+ student; you basically just need to be passionate about improving the quality of student life at AUT. Being an Exec member means you are on the governance board of the association helping to run and give direction as to what AuSM should be doing. It is a perfect opportunity to develop your leadership skills and find out what goes on at the university.
