As I write this column I note that
there is officially only 44 days to go until the National Election
Day and the time will come where we will all get the opportunity to
exercise our right to vote. Currently statistics show that young
adults, between the ages of 18-24 years old are the least likely
group in society to vote. To try and combat this statistic and
encourage more AUT students to exercise their right to vote, AuSM has
teamed up with the NZ Electoral Commission. We understand that
students have extremely demanding schedules and trying to get to a
voting booth on Election Day is not easy for many. In the 2 weeks
prior to the Election Day (Saturday 8 November), AUT students, staff
or any other NZ resident/citizen can have the opportunity to pop by
the AuSM office to cast their vote. So, over the next few weeks why
not start doing some of your own research on the various NZ political
parties. As a starting point I recommend that you check out
www.decision08.co.nz
to give you a background as to what the different political parties
are all about, their policies and what they are currently up to. Look
out for more info in debate in the coming weeks to see how you can
cast your vote.
As of last week's SGM I can now
confirm that the AuSM executive council for 2009 has been fully
appointed and all 13 exec positions have been filled bar one. The
last role that is available is the position of Te Ara Poutama (TAP)
Faculty Rep. If you are a student studying in this faculty and would
like to further develop your leadership skills please get in contact
with me to find out how you can stand for the role. Flick me an email

stand for office this year or were not successful, remember there is
always next year. While I will be stepping down from office at the
end of 2008, I can say quite confidently that I believe the new
council will provide you, the AUT student with the best possible
service in 2009.
Have a great week guys, see you all
around campus!
