Sports 2008

There's no doubt about it, 2008 had huge potential to be a massive year for sports. There have been a few events that are worth a mention and a few that we'd rather forget. Being as the only factor in sport is winning (we all know it) the final sports wrap-up for this year will not be short of competition. This, ladies and gents, is the debate Sporting SmackDown 2008.

The All Blacks vs. The Silver Ferns

The All Blacks have enjoyed outstanding success this season with wins in the Tri-Nations and Bledisloe Cup, despite the absence of Robbie Deans (the piker). On top of that, they put a fair few points on England (who are supposed to be world champs) this winter, as well as scoring some pretty amazing tries against Ireland. The Silver Ferns have really impressed in the recent internationals against England and Aussie, with a few massive wins over the Poms and a couple of thrillers against the Ockers. It's been great netball and, on the uniform front, tight black one-pieces are, apparently, back in fashion. Decent. The All Blacks lost to both the Saffie's and Australia, including a 2 point loss to the Africans at Carisbrook. Disappointing. On top of that, they made their uniform even tighter than last year (thought that'd be impossible) and lost Daniel Carter for the Super 14. I know that has nothing to do with the All Blacks but...whatever. The Silver Ferns have lost, as a percentage, more than the All Blacks, plus they lost to England who are, for all intents and purposes, absolutely shit. All Blacks win.

Presently it seems that every piece of news is dedicated to politics. I know they’re looking for someone to be President of the US, and apparently there’s something like that happening over here too. As a result of this politics obsession, sport has taken a back seat in the assembly hall of public consciousness. Sports related stuff hasn’t stopped happening in case you were wondering, so we can talk about netball, cricket and league as there really isn’t much else going on…

Daniel Braid is a Communist!! Well, he's defected to the Reds anyway. This is quite weird. I understand people moving from Auckland to Wellington as it's still inside the same nation, and I understand people playing in France as, even though you have no allegiance, you will never play against your former team. None of these feel like treason, but Braid's action kind of does. It's like playing for Australia against the All Blacks, but on a smaller scale. The Air new Zealand Cup is coming to an end, but seeing as neither Auckland or Harbour are still playing, what's the point of even playing the games? And since when were Wellington so good? This can only mean the end of civilisation as we know it.

So it happened. The Warriors lost. Well...would we say lost? A more apt description involves a feisty little 6 year old being beaten to a bloody pulp by a professional kick boxer. I'll admit the 32-6 final score wasn't entirely indicative of the match; the Warriors put up more of a fight than that but still...in a semi-final you'd expect something a bit closer, a bit more dramatic.
