However I was right in my declaration
that we can only have one oval balled winner in this nation, so the
minute the All Blacks thumped the Aussies, I knew that the Warriors
would fall down. If only Wade had been back against the Rabbitohs we
would have at least forced extra time as his fantastic boot has saved
our butts before. Lance Hohaia has been solid, but no match for
McKinnon so it will definitely make our side that much stronger.
Well the Beijing Olympics' Opening
Ceremony was on the weekend. Show of hands, who watched it? I have to
write about it before it has happened in order for debate to be at
the printers on time, but that makes no difference as I won't be
watching it anyway.
There will be lots of dancing, colour,
pomp, circumstance, and a lot of people I don't care about. All I
want to see is the highlights of the NZ team on the News. When you
consider how much time and money goes into such an event, you have to
question whether or not it is worth it. However, the opening ceremony
is by far the most watched event of the Games, so clearly I am in a
minority on this one.
Also in sport, Michael Campbell is
still crap, but 18 year old Danny Lee is showing some mighty promise
after winning both the medal and championship honours at the
prestigious Western Amateur, he has now found himself in the US
Amateur Championship, becoming the only Kiwi to have ever done so. Of
course, due to the evil of deadlines, this will be over by the time
you read this, but he is currently the number one amateur in the
world. Not too shabby at all. By the way, the sport is golf.
Adam Gilchrist wants 20/20 cricket to
be in the 2020 Olympics. I wonder where he got the idea for that.
Anyway, I'm all for the expansion of cricket, but there's no way
more countries play it than sevens, so as far as I can tell, it's
just the Aussies trying to get their convict hands on more gold.
For those of you who read my 2008
predictions at the start of the year, one of them was that no work
would be done to upgrade Eden Park. I bow my head in shame at my lack
of psychic abilities. Whether or not it will be ready by 2011 is
another issue.
Finally, could Sonny Bill Williams one
day be an All Black? Only time and a committee of overpaid men will
tell.
