Empire Magazine
It may not be smart business to recommend another magazine that you should read, but as far as movie magazines go, this one reigns supreme. The July issue is probably the best they have done this year with features on The Dark Knight, an in-depth look at rear Window, visiting the set of the new Coen Brothers film (which looks like Lebowski-level hilariousness), and an amazing long interview with Woody Allen. For film lovers it’s a must.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Out this week, the new comedy from the Apatow band is, according to a colleague that got a sneak peak screening, pretty funny. Expect lots of faces from the Freaks and Geeks gang, plus a penis of one of them, and the hot chick from That 70’s Show (who incidentally is also the ugly chick from Family Guy). Looks set to keep us laughing until Tropic Thunder hits our screens.

See It!
The Dark Knight
The most anticipated film of the year without doubt, it sucks that the rest of the world get to see this before the rest of us, but on Thursday it won’t matter. If early reports are to believed this is going to be one heck of an awesome film with an equally awesome villain. I am also super keen to see what Two-Face looks like, what role The Scarecrow will have, and also how much better Maggie G will be than Mrs Cruise was. If you haven’t booked your tickets already, you may not be able to get in to see it on the big Imax screen at SkyCity which is where it belongs.

YouTube It!
Spaced
For some stupid reason this great sitcom from a pre-Shaun of the Dead Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, Nick Frost, and Julia Stevenson has never been released on DVD in Kiwiland, but luckily someone named Bilbo has posted the entire series on YouTube. The show’s plot of Pegg and Stevenson pretending to be a couple to get a nice flat may sound contrived, but the jokes and absurd situations show the promise that these guys would soon deliver on the big screen. And oh so many movie references to keep any film geek happy. For my money, the paintball episode is the best one of the bunch.

GRINDHOUSE (Out now on DVD)
This is a cool double feature from badass directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. Tarantino’s one is called Death Proof and is about a stunt driver (played by Kurt Russell) who stalks groups of sexy women (led by Rosario Dawson) and gets up to dastardly deeds using his “death proof” car. Rodriguez’s one is called Planet Terror and is my favourite of the two. This one is about a virus that is released which turns thousands into zombies, leaving a group of random survivors to save the world. Intentionally B-grade, these films embrace everything non-Hollywood and cheap. Take some very cheesy dialogue, stir in some stupid storylines and smother on a bunch of bad special effects and you’ve got yourself the ultimate B-movie stew. It’s got everything from fake trailers for yet more B-grade artworks, to missing reels and intentionally scratched film, you’ll not know what to expect. It’s gross, it’s badass and it’s got a character named Cherry Darling. Go watch it!

Weeds
Here is a TV show that is both funny and American. Weird right? This is the story of a recently widowed mum who turns to dealing marijuana to the folks in her upper class gated community to keep up her standard of living. Pretty average story, pretty awesome show. Weeds manages to find the perfect balance between funny and dramatic and is all the social suburban satire Desperate Housewives was supposed to be, but with the generous amounts of swearing, sex and, of course, drugs that cable television has to offer. Season 3 is coming soon to Prime so why don’t you get ready by downloading the first two seasons. Ahem, I mean buy the DVD from JB Hi-Fi.
