Smoking, not our future?
AUT may in the future become a smoke free campus with a growing number in the student community wanting to rid the institution of cancer sticks altogether.
President of AUT student association (AuSM), Jan Herman, says students are becoming increasingly aware of the harmful aspects of smoking and want AUT to butt out smokers from campus grounds.
“I believe the student community is gearing towards eventually seeing a smoke free campus,” says Herman.
An AuSM survey revealed that a whopping 70% of the student body would
prefer to have a smoke free campus, 20% did not and 10% did not care
either way.
The dislike for smokers on campus is evident as the ‘letters to the
editor’ section in this publication is inundated with students
expressing their concern about smoking on campus, particularly above
the kindergarten in the quad.
“The reason why students in particular complain about people
smoking on the edge of the quad is due to the fact that there is a
kindergarten located below. This becomes a major issue when smokers
throwing their butts over. Obviously you can imagine that anyone who
has children there would be concerned for their health and safety,”
says Herman.
When asked why they smoke at a place that is clearly sign posted
‘no smoking’, the smokers, who did not want to be named, said that it
was the only place they could go that was covered from the rain and
they could sit down there.
Herman says covered areas are definitely an issue that needs to be addressed.
“AUT are in the process of planning for more construction around
campus, and within that, identifying more areas that can be used for
covering. I think designated smoking areas would be good, however I am
not confident that smokers would use them,” he says.
