International Affairs Officer Job Description
Duration of term: January to December 2008
Reports to: Accountable to students via the AuSM Executive Council.
Note: The role of the International affairs officer is a voluntary position that is remunerated through a $2000 expense payment. The role requires a commitment of approximately 5 hours per week.
Purpose of position:
To represent the interests of current and future International students at AUT through the promotion of policy that encourages and maintains International identity, with special emphasis on integration and participation, within the student body at AUT.
Principal Accountabilities:
To adhere to and act in accordance with the AuSM Constitution and AuSM policy.
• Your primary responsibility as International Affairs Officer is to represent all students at AUT.
• Facilitate communication of International issues between students and the AuSM Executive Council.
• To familiarise yourself with the effective operation and functioning of the Association.
• Assist in providing guidelines and formulating policy for the
Association and for the staff via the Executive Council, including
assisting in the financial running of the Association and setting of
budgets.
• Attend all Executive Council meetings (generally every two weeks) and any other meetings of committees that you sit on.
• Be fully conversant with matters of importance before the Executive and to read all relevant papers before meetings.
• Attend all Student Senate meetings (generally once a month). .
• Ensure that you are fully conversant with the proceedings of any meeting that you are unable to attend.
• Monitor the situation of all International students with regards
to equity within AUT, and make recommendations for action to the
Executive Council as necessary.
• Work in conjunction with the AuSM Events Coordinator to help
organise at least one event per semester that caters to the needs of
International students at AUT.
• Represent AUT students on AUT committees that deal predominantly with International issues.
• Formulate AuSM’s reaction to AUT International fee setting in
conjunction with the President and assist with writing any proposals
necessary.
• Communicate and liaise, where appropriate, with national bodies
with regard to issues affecting International students on a national
level.
• Assist wherever possible at official AuSM activities.
• Represent students at any committees that deal predominantly with
International issues, in particular the International subcommittee of
Academic Board.
• Be available for at least two hours for general Executive Council
duties each week, an hour of which is allocated to meet with students
in relation to your portfolio.
• Present a report every six weeks to the Executive Council
outlining the current situation for International students at AUT, your
work, progress, initiatives, achievements and recommendations to the
Executive Council.
• Maintain regular contact with the President with regards to any issues relating to your portfolio.
YOU CAN EXPECT:
• The support and advice of the AuSM President, Vice President and National Association President.
• To be allowed to question the actions of the President and other Executive Council members.
• To be able to bring any questions regarding the actions of staff
to the attention of the President and have any such questions dealt
with adequately.
• To have the opportunity to apply for performance based expense
payments of up to $2000 to the Executive Council, as per Executive
Council Policy.
• To be consulted on issues affecting or likely to affect International students at AUT.
• Have the opportunity to travel to conferences within New Zealand related to your portfolio.
